DC Phoenix Room

How fortunate I was to participate in the National Symphony Orchestra Designer Showcase House in Washington, D.C. The mansion selected for decoration was built in 1907 in the historic and elegant Kalorama section of Washington, D.C.

Overview

I was granted the Powder Room. There wasn’t a bathroom on the first floor, and we were in need of one for this event. I was appointed the task of turning the existing Butler’s Pantry into the New Powder Room! I was over the moon! As you can see from the image, the room was diminutive, somber and dingy- but had so much potential. It was hiding these grand architectural elements such as a bay of original leaded glass windows, high ceilings and exposed wood beams. I named this room the Phoenix Room as I was inspired by a beautiful textile from Carragio that showcased a jewel toned Peacock or Phoenix. The Phoenix represents the rebirth of the sun, and that is exactly what this scant space longed for… color and light!
